General notes
The two circular wards at Victoria Hospital ('Butterworth' and 'Thursby') had a total of 44 beds with sun rooms and a patients promenade on the roofs at its opening in 1886. it soon became clear that there was a need for a children's ward and cots were located on Butterworth ward. This was an inconvenience for sick women in the ward so money was donated to build a children ward. The foundation stone was laid 24th May 1890 and new unit opened on 25th July 1891.
