It contains 53 beds and 23 cots and the total cost was £21,578. the foundation stone was laid by Colonel, how Sior John-Hardy Thursby and it was opened on October 12, 1886 by His Royal Highness Prince Albert Victor, K.G. The ground - two acres - was given by Rev. William Thursby. The movement for the erection of the hospital originated at a meeting held in St., Matthew's Parish called for the purpose of considering the advisability of establishing a Cottage Hospital. At that meeting Dr. Brown proposed and Mr. N. P. Gray seconded the following resolution: "That a committee be formed for the purpose of charging before the town the necessity of establishing a Cottage or the hospital for the sick poor." The resolution was carried and the following gentlemen were appointed members to the committee: the Rev. RH Giles, Dr Mackenzie, Messrs. WM Grant, NP Gray, T. Hoghton and J. Langfield Ward, M.A. Shortly afterwards a representative meeting was put before the Council Chamber and a provisional executive committee appointed, of which Mr. John Butterworth was appointed chairman, Mr. NP Gray treasurer.
