The isolation hospital opened in November 1876 in converted cottages, opposite the workhouse/ infirmary entrance. Following a smallpox epidemic in the town in September 1876, measures were taken to convert four cottages to provide accommodation in 6 separate rooms for about 12 urgent cases of smallpox.
