General notes
Town Hall and Mechanics' Institution. The foundation stone of the Town Hall was laid on 24th October 1885. It was opened on 27th October by the Mayor (Alderman George Sutcliffe). The total cost of the buildings (including the Public Baths behind) was £55,000. The foundation stone of the Mechanics' Institution was laid by Lord Carlisle on the 25th November 1851, Colonel Charles Towneley presiding on this occasion. It was opened in the year 1855. The Institution was one of the most successful in the Kingdom and provided teachers for 70- 80 subjects, including the sciences, languages, art and technical subjects. There was accommodation for 1,000 student sand there were many valuable scholarships attached to the Institution.
