It was opened on 2nd August,1849, built on a site, given by Peregrine Edward Towneley at a cost of £15,000.
A convent was added in 1884 and District schools were opened as follows:
St Thomas' Meadows, 1877
St Mary Magdalene's, 1883
St John the Baptist, 1894
A home for girls opened in Fulledge House from 1890 to 1897.
