General notes
The foundation stone of Providence Chapel was laid 26th September 1836 and the chapel opened for worship 24th August 1837. When it was erected it was at the centre of a scattered population. however, it was soon realised that a new centre of population was developing around the junction of Halifax Road and the now Colne Road, formerly the turnpike road. This eventually led to the opening of a new chapel at Brierfield in 1878. From that date the old chapel declined and soon only two services a year were held there. The chapel celebrated its centenary in 1937, the building was demolished in 1949.
