General notes
Prior to the Industrial Revolution villagers in Higham used to collect water from a spring known as the Frog Well in Spring Meadow – now the children’s playing field, where the spring (which became known as Well Head) still exists near the top corner. When the mill and workers cottages were built in the 1850’s the mill owners gave the village its water supply by piping from the Frog Well to the middle of the village and building “The Spout”. It became a classic feature of the village.

Subsequently the water from The Spout became well known for its purity and freshness; even in modern times, many locals preferred it to tap water and continued to collect it by hand. However, as appears from the statutory notice now required to be fixed to it, the water is untreated and its quality cannot be guaranteed.
