General notes
Nick O' Thung Charity drew members from North East Lancashire Working Men's Clubs and from the villages and farms around Pendle Hill. Ever since 1854, the members met on the first Sunday of May, in an isolated clough between Barley and Rimington. Before a man could join in the outing, he had to produce at least half-a-crown, and if he was a smoker, also an ounce of tobacco and a box of matches. No spongers or cadgers were admitted, and members must keep a still tongue about what they saw and heard. The following password had to he said without stumbles or stammer for membership:
"Thimbering Thistlewaite thievishly thought to thrive through thick and thin by throwing his thimbles about, but he was thwarted and thwacked, thumped and trashed by thirty thousand thistles and thorns for thievishly thinking to thrive through thick and thin by throwing his thimbles about."
After the feasting, Cock-Fighting was the chief entertainment. Though illegal, the police never appeared.
