General notes
Ernest Gartside (pictured with bike) was a member of the Old Star Cycling Club and later the Nelson Wheelers.

Bike information (written on photo): "A unique specimen of the old 'Velocipede' Wooden Wheels, iron tyres. Introduced into this country about 1868 and is on record of over 3000 miles being covered in one year. This is the type of machine before advent of the tall ordinary and rubber tyres. This machine is the property of the Nelson Star Cycling Club."

The 'Velocipede' is defined as a human-powered land vehicle with one or more wheels, and it is often used as a historical term for early bicycles or tricycles. The Velocipede was reinvented by the Michaux family of Paris in the 1860s, who popularised the design with iron and wooden constructions and a front-wheel drive mechanism.
