General notes

The original photograph was taken by Tattersall & Rogers, whose business was based at 88, Blackburn Road between c. 1868 and c. 1876. It appears to have been printed in reverse. The location for the school on the 1848 OS map appears to be incorrect. It stood next to the main road through the village, not on Back Lane. Writing in the Accrington Observer for 11th March 1922, local historian Richard Ainsworth said 'An interesting bit of old Baxenden, now non-existent, was the old school...a small one-storey building, doorway in centre, a window on each side, with round-headed lights divided by mullions... In its latter days it was in use as a newsroom for the village. It occupied a corner of a field, now built upon, by the row of brick houses on the opposite side to the church. The end of the row nearest the Bay Horse covers the site of the old school.'
