Tommy Mercer was a sales representative for the firm of Thornbers, which sold day-old chicks. The photograph was taken when he had just joined the firm covering mid-west Lancashire. He had previously been a car salesman. He was born in Clayton-le-Moors, but later lived in Great Harwood
