General notes
The coal barges Edward and May being unloaded at Spring Bank Mill in the summer of 1962.
The large tub seen swinging down was filled by two barge men wielding large shovels. The barges carried around 40 tons and were originally owned by Hargreaves Coal Company of Burnley. They were filled at the wharf at Bank Hall Colliery and although the mines were nationalised in 1947 the NCB did not change the logo on the boats, they still carried the 'H' for Hargreaves monogram on the rear cabin between the portholes.
