General notes
"Contrary to what has been written about Kew Gardens, I find that these gardens supplied a want in Nelson at a time when entertainment was short. As late as 1901, special trains were run from all parts of the North of England for the unusual festivals held on the grounds. The prize money on one occasion amounted to over £200. All classes were catered for including Whippet racing, Fox terrier racing and sacred concerts", Mr Henry Foulds.
