General notes
Penny House stood in Penny House Lane, off Burnley Road, and was demolished when Queens Road was made. The date on the building was 1688, but it existed in the 16th century, when the rent supported a chantry priest in Great Harwood Church. In Queen Elizabeth's reign 1563, it was owned by the Cunliffe family. During the 18th Century it was owned or occupied by the families Kenyon, Whittaker and Dennison. When sold to the Corporation for public improvements, it was owned by William Salter of Strawberry Bank. The reputed Accrington witch Jenny Sheldrake, resided here.
