General notes
Alderman John Ambrose Helliwell served as mayor for two terms, 1933-4 and 1934-5. Alderman Helliwell was born at Cornholme near Todmorden and was an agent for sewing machines, with a stall in the Market Hall until it burnt down in 1932. He lost an eye when a shot-gun exploded near his face. Alderman Helliwell served on the council from his election in 1913 until his death. His wife died before his mayoralty and so his daughter Mrs Marjorie Pearson served as his mayoress.
