General notes
Back Lane lies on the route of an old long distance north-south road, Coldwell lies near the junction of this route with another running east west along the flanks of Boulsworth. The well after which it was named was probably used by the travellers on this route. A farm was built near the well and later (1841) an inn was added. By 1903 the inn had acquired a bad name as a centre of illegal gambling and the police carried out numerous raids culminating in 1922 in an operation involving over 90 officers from several forces.
The inn closed in 1941 and became derelict. In 1985 a charity was formed to transform the building into an activity centre for mentally and physically disabled groups. This opened four years later.
