General notes

Vale Mill, Nelson, was The Vale Room and Power Co. of Nelson. It provided power and shed space for small groups of weavers. They could rent room and power and purchase their own looms, which in the late 19th century could be bought for £16 each, building up to owning their own shed.
The engine was a Horizontal cross compound condensing engine, built by William Roberts and Co. Phoenix Foundry in Nelson, 650 HP. in 1890. Corliss valves cylinders were fitted in 1924 when less power was needed.
