General notes
"The entrance gates embody some very fine carving. The family coat-of-arms surmounts the main gates, flanked at either side by a demi-lion rampant holding in its paws a massive key - the Walton crest. The pedestals for these figures are formed of crest-coronets, with oak leaves and gems as decoration. On one side there stands the figure of a wild man and his cub." In 1760 Banastre Walton's crest for his coat-of-arms was a "Wild Man Proper", his Clubb Azure." From "A brief history of the Waltons" by H Margerison, 1926, p. 7
