John Towneley 1528 - 1607
Acquired estates through marriage to his cousin, Mary Towneley (then aged 13). They had a family of 7 boys and 7 girls.
A staunch Catholic, between 1558 to 1568 he hid 2 Catholic priests at the Hall and secretly attended Mass. He spent about 34 years in prison for his faith and was heavily fined.
Governor of Burnley Grammar School from 1577, paying for the building of the schoolroom.
Released from prison, sick and almost blind he died at Towneley in 1607.
