Charles Towneley J. P. 1803-1876. Deputy Lieutenant of the County and High Sheriff. Colonel of the Militia and owner of "Butterfly" which won the Oaks in 1860 and of "Kettledrum" which won the Derby in 1861. Church bells were rung in Burnley to celebrate victory in these races.
