The Maypole Dairy company began trading in 1887. They expanded rapidly and by 1913 were the largest retail chain in Britain with over 800 shops. The shops sold their branded products which included eggs, cheese, condensed milk, butter, margarine and tea. Some products they manufactured themselves such as some of their margarine. Others were imported, in particular large quantities of butter were purchased from Denmark.

They are notable for being one of the first companies if not the first company to market margarine to consumers. The original family of owners sold their share of the company in 1924 but the brand "Maypole Dairy" carried on with the last Maypole Dairy shutting in 1970.
