General notes
The land for the church was given by the Ecroyd family, the foundation stone being laid on 16th June 1877. Two years later the church was consecrated. Some years later a tower, with spire was added, being completed in 1908. It stands 191 feet high and is a prominent landmark. The church closed in 1987 and was sold by the church commissioners. It lay empty for some years before being acquired by the heritage Trust for the North West, who hoped to establish a centre for the teaching of traditional crafts there.
