General notes
This canal was one of the major engineering feats of the canal's construction. At 1640 yards long, it took five years to construct, (opening in 1796), using the 'cut and cover' method as it was so near the surface. In 1912 a cow called Buttercup fell in the canal and swam though the tunnel. The photograph predates the introduction of traffic lights to control the passage of boats through the tunnel.
