General notes
Land for 'recreation grounds' was purchased by Nelson Local Board from Mr Every-Clayton under recently acquired powers in 1886. Victoria Park was created using 8 acres of this land. In the centre of the photograph can be seen a drinking fountain. This was presented to the town by Mr Astley, Chairman of the Local Board and was located in the town centre until 1903. It was then moved to the park to make way for trams and now stands close to the footbridge over Pendle Water.
