General notes
A large inscribed stone measuring eight feet long, two feet wide and one and a half feet deep was placed beside an old road [now known as Written Stone Lane] in Dilworth near Longridge during the 17th century. The wording on the stone reads "Ravffe: Radcliffe: laide: this: stone: TO LYE FOR:ever: a.d 1655". The reason the stone was placed there is unknown but many myths and legends have grown up around it. Some of these tales can be found in Jessica Lofthouses's "Lancashires Fair Face" 1952 or "Lancashire Legends" by John Harland and TT Wilkinson 1873.
