General notes
Grindleton is almost certainly of Anglo-Saxon origin; a farming settlement ("ton") at Grendling meaning the gravelly stream. The River Ribble is notorious for the speed at which the river rises after rain, making fords and ferries unreliable. Bridging the river was therefore important.

Grindleton was a poor village, but the coming of the railways changed everything. The new stone and metal wide bridge replacing the old foot bridges allowing the farmers to take their fresh milk to the station at Chatburn.

The old ferry boat was sold for a leisure craft at Brungerley.
