General notes
23 Church St, called Study House was not Dr. Webster's Study. Unfortunately it is now gone. Dr. John Webster was a cleric, astrologer and student of alchemy but is best known locally, especially following the Pendle Witch trials of 1612, for his book, “The Displaying of Supposed Witchcraft” published in 1677 in which he denounced he existence of witchcraft as anything but superstition. St. Mary’s church alongside contains a very interesting brass plaque bearing his epitaph which is thought to have been written by Webster himself.
