General notes
There are 5 silver topped staves carried on ceremonial occasions by the Town Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Town Clerk.
Staves are the traditional symbol of lawful authority carried on ceremonial occasions. Initially they were carried by the parish Beadles and, after the beginnings of what we would now recognize as policing by Sir Robert Peel in 1829, by the earlier Constables - often an honorary role at this stage.
