Giggleswick
St Alkelda's Church, Giggleswick, a Grade 1 listed building, stands on a site that has seen a place of worship since Saxon Times. St Alkelda's name is associated with "holy springs" and it is said the saint was strangled by two Viking/Danish women because of her adherence to her Christianity. They principal parts of the current building date from the 14th and 15th centuries, with some later additions. It's early English and Perpendicular architectural styles set it apart from many.
It was from a grant of land from the church to establish a school in the very early 16th Century that Giggleswick School was born. One of its former teachers, the television personality Russell Harty, is buried in the graveyard.
