General notes
The use of stocks as a form of punishment dates back to biblical times and were also popular among civil authorities from mediaeval to early modern times, the last recorded use of stocks in the United Kingdom was in 1872. The stocks depicted are incomplete in that they are missing the boards through which the offender's hands and feet would be locked. Punishments were carried out in all weathers and offenders would receive only bread and water and suffer the abuse of the public. The stocks were certainly in use in1803 when Jonathan Read was paid 1s 6d for repairs to the stocks.
