The photograph shows the River Hodder near Doeford Bridge, which carries the road between Whitewell and Chipping. The bridge, which is visible towards the background of the image, is just downstream of the confluence of the Rivers Hodder and Loud, and at a point where the Hodder's general north-south direction swings eastwards and then south east towards Mitton where it joins the River Ribble at Hacking Ferry. The river source is above Slaidburn.
