General notes
The church of St Peter and St Paul stands in the centre of the village. There is evidence of a church occupying the site by 1190. The oldest surviving parts of the present building date from the 13th Century, while most of the existing structure dates from the mid-15th Century. At this time, Sir Ralph Pudsey, then Lord of the Manor of Bolton, rebuilt the church. It was completed c.1466. This fine and fascinating church has retained its distinct late-Mediaeval character. Its contents offer abundant evidence of the local importance of the Pudsey/Pudsay family. (The spelling of the surname over the centuries varies between these two forms). It is well worth exploring!
