General notes
TThere is no clear evidence from the slide where this photograph was taken. Nor is it clear if the image is of the place where Paslew was executed or where his body was hung in chains afterwards.

Paslew was tried in Lancaster Castle for his perceived role in the Pilgrimage of Grace. His execution took place in a location known as Gallows Hill, outside the town and on the moors close to the modern Williamson's Park. It seems likely that this is the location of the photograph.

After Paslew's body was returned to Whalley it was ordered that it should be hung in chains outside the Abbey, although the exact spot is not fully clear. An inscribed stone grave slab purported to that of the abbot is in Whalley Church.
