General notes
Taken from the Chancel, this photograph offers an excellent view of the Nave and West End of the church.
(Please see also ECL20131105008 for further information about the church building and development.)
The Nave is made of 4 bays and the North and South aisles were built sometime after c. 1250. The 15th Century roof is of oak and superbly carved with rose designs at the intersections.
Looking down the Nave, the yellow gritstone Normanesque pillars, locally quarried, are clearly seen. These date from the 13th Century rebuilding and, unusually, are round on the north side and octagonal on the south. Both support early English pointed arches. The carved heads above the second and third pillars on the north side and the carved stone above the pillar on the south are judged to be from the earlier Norman church.
Above the Nave floor at the far end is the Gallery (see ECL20131105003).
The Chancel itself (illustrated in the following two images in this series) measures 52 x 25 feet. The stalls were carved in about 1430 and came from the church in Whalley Abbey; rare in medieval works, the name of the craftsman, a Mr. Eatough, has survived. The misericord carvings represent subjects including angels, devils, grapevines, pomegranates, The Holy Trinity, two eagles carrying Alexander up to heaven, a blacksmith shoeing a goose, a girl with a weeping satyre, a wife beating her husband with a pan, and a splendid St George and the dragon. Jenkins comments that the misericords are beautifully executed and deserve national repute. (Please see ECL20131105006/7)
