General notes
This is the Nave of the church. It measures 72 x 24 feet and has four bays. It is of Early English style; the North arcade has round piers and the South has octagonal piers, all having moulded caps and bases. The arches are pointed and double chamfered.

The Gallery seen on the left and right foreground in this image, was installed in the second half of the 17th Century, probably after 1666. By this stage, the Nave had become the centre of worship and predominantly occupied by family pews for leading landowners and other prominent local families. There were also pews allocated to the Churchwardens of the dependent churches in the area and for the Constable. The gallery was constructed partly to accommodate people of inferior rank.

Another important function of the gallery was to accommodate the singers and musicians; more rarely in this period the organ housed in the West Gallery was been used.

(For another view see ECL20131105005.)

The Organ was made for the Lancaster Prior in 1727 by Gerard Smith. It was moved to Whalley in 1818 and has since been enlarged and improved four times. In 1909, when other work on the interior of the church was being undertaken (as you will see by looking at information about the pulpit, for example) it was rebuilt where part of the gallery was removed.
