General notes
M. Townend in his book "Images of Burnley" states that many workers went home during their lunchtime break if their house was close enough. Clogs and shawls, worn by many in the photograph, were synonymous with the cotton industry. Until the 1920s older children worked half time".The railway viaduct visible in the background, was built in 1848 and spans the R. Calder, Royle Road and Caldervale Road .
