Burnley Building Society was founded in 1850, in 1984, it merged with National and Provincial Building Society with headquarters in Bradford, These offices were built on the site of Salem Congregational Baptist Church which was demolished in 1973 (see images ID 241780and 241781) and were subsequently occupied by Endsleigh Insurance for 25 years until 2016. The building was then sold and converted into flats.
Sir Herbert Ashworth died in 2001 aged 90, born in Burnley, he joined the Burnley Building society at 15 and had a long and distinguished career in the sector. He was Chairman of the Nationwide Building Society from 1970 - 1982.
