General notes
Batty Wife Beck appears from the photograph to be a marshy area to the south of the Ribble head viaduct. It is no longer identifiable. However there was a description by the well- known Yorkshire historian Harry Speight in 1892. A Batty Wife Hole, he said, was a ring of stones on his walk down the south side of Whernside near Winterscales. Archaeologists have searched and failed to find it.
