This is a photograph of a painting of Thomas Lister, the 4th Baron Ribblesdale, painted in 1890 by by John Singer Sargent. The portrait has been said to epitomise the British aristocrat. The 4th Baron Ribblesdale (1854 - 1925) was born in Fontainbleau, the eldest son of Thomas Lister 3rd Baron Ribblesdale and his wife Emma (nee Mure). He was a Liberal politician under Gladstone and Rosebury from 1880 to 1895. He was master of Buckhounds, Captain in the Rifle Brigade and Trustee of the National Gallery from 1909 to 1925.
