General notes
Cannon Street linked Hall Street (formerly Hall Rake) with Bridge Street and was located in the area of Burnley known as Wapping. In 1800 there were 35 properties on the street and many of these were taverns and 'tippling shops', set up to provide a place of relaxation for the local mill workers.

In 1897 the right hand side of the street, from the Water Street intersection up to Hall Street, was demolished by the Corporation as part of a project to clear up some of the slums that had developed in the area, and also to enable the widening of St. James's Street. The Palace Theatre was laterbuilt on this site. The remaining properties were demolished in c1966 as part of another town centre re-development programme. In the background can be see The Well Hall Hotel, and the white painted premises at the end of the street were cellar dwellings.
