General notes
This section of Coal Clough Lane was part of what was known as Treacle Row. The origin of the name is unclear, but early documents called it Treadle Row. It is possible that the residents, who were mostly hand loom weavers, were so poor that they could only afford to eat treacle and bread, hence the name.
It consisted of sixteen cottages of various sizes which were built in the 18th century. They were situated between what is now St. Matthew's Street (formerly Blind Lane) and Scott Park Road, on the site of where the library is today. This particular photograph shows the buildings nearest the St. Matthew's Street end of the row. The majority of the cottages were demolished in c1916, but two survived this re-development and remained there until 1955.
