General notes
Valley Street was one of three streets off Rossendale Road, along with Hapton and Griffin Street, which made up the area known as 'Little Cornwall'.
The name derived from the Cornish miners who were originally brought to Burnley to break the Cliviger miners' strike of 1873/4 and who also worked at other pits in the town. These streets were built as an enclave for the miners who were intended to be employed in the near-by Barclay Hills pit. However, the houses weren't finished until after the influx of people from the South West had subsided and therefore were never occupied by the Cornish; the name 'Little Cornwall' stuck though. The houses were demolished shortly after this photograph was taken.
