John was born in Long Preston, near Settle in Yorkshire. He moved to Burnley and started work as a cabbie in c1891. He plied his trade from the taxi rank on Red Lion Street. By the time he retired in c1930, he was the only horse drawn cab driver left in the town. He married twice in his life, first to Ellen, who sadly passed away and then to Agnes in 1906. John passed away at the age of 76 in 1939.
