General notes
The central baths opened on the 6th July 1887. They superseded the previous public baths that were located in the Public Hall on Elizabeth Street. The central baths contained two swimming baths and a number of slipper and medicinal baths. From as early as 1948 Burnley Corporation had decided that better facilities were required for the town, but it wasn't until the construction of the Thompson Centre that these plans came to fruition. This photograph from 1973 shows the early stages of the baths demolition.
