Owen Graystone Bird's Glass Slides from c1900
Around 2004, Lancashire County Libraries purchased some glass plates of Silverdale by the photographer Owen Graystone Bird (1862-1943).

The family business was started in Bath by Frederick Bird, followed by his son, Frederick Charles Bird and then by his son Graystone Bird who took over his Father's business about 1894. A catalogue at the Science Museum refers to his artistic and beautiful lantern slides.
At this time, the business operated from 38 Milsom Street in Bath

We were able to acquire the slides when they were put up for sale to raise money for a local church.

Most of the glass plates are of the Silverdale and Arnside area with a few others from the surrounding area. They're in colour, but are not on colour film- they are black and white glass plates, and are hand-painted.

While glass plates are incredibly detailed, they're also quite fragile and difficult to view.
