DAVARA (FD152) was brought to Fleetwood in 1912 as a newly built vessel for the Mount Steam Fishing Co Ltd. In Royal Navy service as an escort vessel and mine-sweeper from 1914-1919. The trawler was sunk by U-boat gunfire 21 miles NW x N off Tory Island on 13/09/1939. The crew of the Davara were fishing with their nets down when the submarine started firing at them without warning. The U-boat stopped firing for 5 minutes as the crew lowered the lifeboat, but as soon as the boat was in the water the firing began again. About 35 shells hit the Davara before she went down, taking half an hour to sink. The crew rowed the lifeboat for 4¢ hours before being picked up by a cargo steamer. The men had to bail out as the boat had been damaged whilst getting away from the trawler. The Davara was the first trawler to be sunk by a U-Boat in World War Two. The men on board on this trip were William Boyles, G T Pugh, W L Spall, A Scott, J Higgins, R O Welch, J Greggor, C W Sharpe, E Prentice, D G Gall, G S Hunter and H R Wright.
