This view of St. James's Street was taken circa 1899. It is possible that the photographer gained an elevated position from looking out of a window of the Bull Hotel, on Manchester Road.

Notable businesses in the photograph are Bayne & Son, based in the tall building on the left, who were woollen merchants, and Slater Brothers, who were their neighbours until they moved to premises on Manchester Road c1901.
