The Brown family opened a grocery shop at 94 Coal Clough Lane in c1905. The first proprietor was Albert Brown, who lived there with his wife Mary and their son Arthur. Arthur would later take over the running of the business from c1941 to c1947. After this period Geoffrey Brown ran the shop. It is difficult to say whether he was related to the previous owners or not.
