This is a photograph of Sandygate, now Burnham Gate, near the junction with Coal Clough Lane.

Sandygate dates back to the medieval period, when it was used as part of the original route to Padiham. The surrounding area was arable farmland that belonged to homestead in the Westgate settlement. Moving in to the Victorian period, the land use changed as industry developed around the Mitre Works and rows of terraced houses sprang up.
