This is tram number 44, waiting with its driver and conductor on Manchester Road.

Services up Manchester Road to the Romney Avenue terminus started in February 1904. Due to the steepness of the gradient and some low bridges, single-decker trams, like the one pictured here were purchased to run the route. Trams ran in Burnley until 1935 when they were scrapped in favour of the more versatile bus.
